Harvest Festival

Vegtables in a basket.

We will be supporting the Caterham Foodbank and Welcare at our service on 24 September.

If this can be in monetary form, that would be ideal, with cheques or money in a sealed envelope showing which charity it is to go to. Non-
perishable foods will still be accepted as these can be taken to the Foodbank on the Thursday when they are open.

There will be a Harvest Lunch to follow in the Church Hall. No information yet.

Surrey Churches Ride & Stride

Ride and Stride for Churches logo.

The Surrey Churches Preservation Trust runs the Ride & Stride (on bikes or walking) on the second Saturday of September (Saturday 9th September 2023) each year to raise money for both the Trust and for participating churches, with half the money raised going to each.

Raising money is ever more important as repairs to churches rather came to a halt during the pandemic but the need has not gone away.

It is open to everyone to take part, whether church-goers or not, bikers, hikers and other visitors, whether by car, mobility scooter or horse.

Our riders and striders will need sponsorship for their efforts and Julie Woodland is going to take part. If you would like to sponsor her, please complete the Sponsorship Form which Julie has or there’s one at the back of the church.

Would more people like to take part  – a great way to walk the dog ? If so, please use our contact form to get the details.

Do have a great day out!

Julie Woodland, our church organiser

Bunting to welcome Revd Jaimee Summers

Examples of bunting.
You may have missed Milica’s call to make bunting to welcome our new Vicar in September. The aim is to complete this so we can decorate the church for Jaimee’s licencing on the 25th Sept.

In the photo you can find some examples of how we might individually be able to contribute.

Milica will provide the white triangle (Made from old sheets) but needs you to take one or more triangles and decorate it. You could decorate it to represent an organisation you are part of, a role you have at church, or just because it is something you feel able to do.

You could use, paints and crayons; you could sew on buttons or ribbons; you could decorate with flowers or emblems, with stencils or fabric, with biblical stories or something that represents you.

If you don’t already have a blank piece of bunting let me or Milica know and or come to church on Sunday when we can hopefully equip you.

We hope that you will feel able to take part.
Susan G & Milica R

Archives Party

A framed seating plan for St John's, probably from before World War I.

Did you join us on Saturday 22nd July and help us unravel the history of our church?

We met in the hall throughout the day to explore papers, pictures and documents which give us an insight into our Church over the last 140 years. We hope to sort the items before collating and displaying important items at the Heritage Open days in September.

Munch with Music July 2023 Andrew Carrido performs

If you were planning to join us for MwM, I'm afraid you're too late! Munch with Music has packed its bucket and spade and gone on holiday until October.

What a send off though. Andrew treated us to a trio of the masters, the energy, bounce and intricacies of Mozart, the sublime, transcendent and elegant Debussy, the gentle weaving and blending of Chopin.

All is not lost though, the video gives a taster and hint of the beautiful performance from Andrew, who hopefully will return.

The Collation and Induction of our new vicar

The Service of Collation and Induction of Revd. Jaimee Summers, our new Vicar, will be on Monday 25th September at 7.30pm.

This will be led by Bishop Rosemarie and our Archdeacon Moira.

There will be food and drink in the hall after the service.

Car parking arrangements

There is a choice of 3 places to park, all requiring a bit of walking.

1.    CROUDACE CAR PARK
Croudace House, Tupwood Lane, Caterham CR3 6XQ
As you turn into Tupwood Lane from Godstone Road, the entrance is the 1st on the right with the car park round to the right of the building.  To get to St. John’s Church, come out of the gate, turn left, then left again at bottom of the hill into Godstone Road.  Continue to walk until you see the church on the left.  Come in through the gate and follow the path to the right of the church to the porch and entrance.

2.    UNITED REFORMED CHURCH CAR PARK
    2 Harestone Hill, Caterham, Surrey CR3 6SX
Our neighbouring church, the other side of Morrisons’ car park have kindly offered their car park to us, though there is only space for possibly 15 cars.  Please park within their bays.
Turn into Harestone Valley Road, continue to mini roundabout and start to go up the hill (Harestone Hill), church on right has the clock tower.  There is a gate for the lower car park about 20 yards up, then a wider entrance a few yards further up, for parking the hall end of the building.
To get to St. John’s Church, come back out to the pavement and turn right up the hill for a few yards.  On the left, Clareville Road comes into Harestone Hill by a high brick wall.  Cross the road and walk along Clareville Road which will turn to the left and downhill.  The church is on the right.  Come through the gap in railings then walk to the left of the church until you come to the porch and the main entrance.

3.     MORRISONS’ CAR PARK
Entrance is from mini roundabout at Harestone Valley Road & Harestone Hill junction.
They have agreed to allow parking after store closes, but the exit will be via the entrance as main exit will be closed.  However there is still 3 HOURS FREE PARKING otherwise you’ll be fined.
Turn into Harestone Valley Road, continue to mini roundabout and take 1st exit into entrance to car park.  Try to park on the ground floor, or failing that, on the middle floor.  DON’T GO TO THE TOP !
When you arrive you can walk through the precincts with Morrisons on your right as you come out of car park.  Follow down to road and turn right.  By the seats and fountain turn right up Church Walk, to the top.  Turn left and cross the road to the church porch and the entrance.
When you return to your car, the precincts will be shut.  Walk past the station, turn left into Harestone Valley Road, then left at mini roundabout into the car park.  IGNORE Exit signs and go out the gates where you’ve came in.

Map of car parks available around St John's Church.

Disabled access to St. John’s is via the South door, opposite the main entrance.
