Big Green Day 2024

A big green day 15 June 2024 St Lawrence's Church.

A small group of our Eco Church reps locally are facilitating a one day event at St. Lawrence's Church and we would love as many as possible of you to promote and support this important initiative.

The event runs during the Caterham Festival, on Saturday 15th June between 11am and 4pm. By bringing people together on the 15th we hope to be able to share stories, hope, ideas for our future and as a result begin to help people to become more thoughtful and better informed about ways in which we are all called to care for God's creation.

Royal School of Church Music - Music Sunday

Organ pipes.

We warmly welcome everyone either in person in church, or through our streamed service, to our Sunday service, led by Revd Jaimée Summers.

On RSCM Music Sunday several members of the church are going to speak about what music means to them.

We mark the centenary of the death of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford with his tune for "When in our music God is glorified" and 350 years since the birth of Jeremiah Clarke with Paul Miller playing the Trumpet Voluntary.

The anthem is William Boyce's Alleluia and the opening Fanfare is by Kenneth Leighton.

Lucas Saraiva Cunha and Samira Alexandra Manole on piano

Exuberant, thoughtful, restful, energetic and romantic. All applicable to Lucas and Samira's solo and duet performances, excerpts of which you can listen to in the video.

Pudding Club and Games Evening in Church Hall

People playing a London Underground travel game.

A rich choice of puddings, not to be trifled with (apart from the sherry trifles). Banoffee pie, fruit salad, scones, Viennetta (hmmm) and many other delicious pudding were on offer to the discerning diner.

After filling plates, bowls and faces, 6 swift games of 'beetle' followed. Oh, the frustration of not being able to throw a six to get started!

Then a wide array of games were on offer, the vicar wealded a mean bananagrams technique, there was a London Underground game, a bit of Dobble and rumours of a bomb being handed around!

Looked like everyone was having a good time, even those occasionally being 'blown' up.

Bell Sunday

Embroidered image of a bell ringer.

The 12 May is a date that is easy to remember as it should ring a bell (sorry). Bell Sunday is a celebration of bell ringing and how it fits in with church and community.

At St John's Caterham, the 10am service will be call changed a little to reflect the theme. The traditional rounds of prayers, hymns, talk and holy communion, will reflect a little of the history, practice and relevance of the art of bell ringing.

After the service the tower will be open, with a demonstration, an ascent up a spiral staircase to look at the bells and a chance to chime a bell (under supervision).

Milica has chosen to capture some of our ringers in action, her chosen method being embroidery onto the plastic wrappers that the Ringing World is posted in each week! There are many painstaking hours of work in the 8 banners, one for each bell.

This Sunday will be particularly poignant as a retired ringer at St John's, Ken, died recently.
